The Relationship Between Entrepreneurship and the Social Sciences

Entrepreneurship can help people build careers that are in direct alignment with their values, such as helping others or preserving the environment, and thus provide a physical and mental satisfaction that other occupations cannot.

It is therefore often regarded as a significant subject of study within the social sciences. It also is an interdisciplinary discipline that draws upon the disciplines of sociology, management, law, anthropology, public policy and management of not-for-profit organizations.

In this article, we review the research on entrepreneurship education for non-business students. We also propose a synergetic framework for the existing research based upon four dimensions of social learning: observational learning, the role of mentors and peers as well as the entrepreneurial ecosystem as a place for social learning, as well as institutional influences on learning. We then discuss how this framework can be utilized in a more systematic fashion to guide research and development of education for entrepreneurs in the near future. We also provide a thorough bibliographic analysis, aided by VOSviewer, Bibliometrix and highlighting the most well-known authors, institutions including countries, seminars, seminars journals, and topics. This provides a complete and deep understanding of the current state of the field. The analysis also contains information about future research areas and knowledge gaps.
