The World Uses a Variety of Different Energy Sources
The world has a wide range of different energy sources. In 2018 fossil fuels like gas, oil and coal, comprised over 81 percent of the energy consumed. Renewable energy sources, such as solar power, wind, hydroelectricity and biomass, make up for 14 percent. Nuclear energy is another 5 percent. Different countries employ different combinations of energy sources, in order to balance the environmental aspects with economics.
Nature’s energy comes in many forms like sun, wind waves, and ocean. These sources of energy transform into more efficient energy forms, such as electricity or heat, once they are harnessed. When those energies are exhausted, they are non-renewable energy sources.
The environment is damaged by many fossil fuels as well as some other energy sources that aren’t renewable. Mining oil, for instance can cause the destruction of our forests that are virgin to the earth. Hydraulic fracturing (fracking) can cause earthquakes and pollute the water. Carbon dioxide is released when coal is burned and contributes to global warming.
Fortunately, a lot of the most promising sources of energy are renewable and sustainable. Hydropower, wind and solar for instance, could generate electricity without having to search for fresh supplies.
Tidal and Wave Power are also sustainable energy sources that are emerging. However, in order to be used in a large-scale manner they must have effective distribution networks. This requires the use of non-renewable energy sources to build these networks. These sources are not able to provide the majority of our energy demands. It’s still important to remember that the cost of renewable energy equipment has drastically decreased in recent years and the efficiency is rising.
