The most important aspect of data communications is understanding your audience and creating visualizations that convey information in a way that is compelling. Effective data communication may involve using the appropriate words to convey the information.

A basic definition of data communication is the transfer of data from one computer to another over an internet connection or other medium. The information can be anything from an ordinary text message to an audio file or Hyperlink. The medium used to transmit data could be wired or wireless. In order for two computers to be able to communicate they must have a means of connecting together. This is known as a channel or network.

There are several types of data transmission channels that are utilized in modern networks for data communications. These include simplex, duplex and full-duplex. Simplex mode only permits information to flow in only one direction at a time and duplex mode permits both sender and receiver to transmit simultaneously. Full-duplex mode is comparable to duplex, but it demands that the transmitter and receiver be synchronized in order for them to accurately read individual binary data bits in the signal transmitted.

Information transmitted through an electronic data communication channel can be digital messages sent by a microprocessor or an analog signal (such as phone calls or video) that has been digitalized using pulse-code modulation. To ensure that the receiver gets the correct information, errors in data transmission have to be detected and corrected. This is usually accomplished by the use of sequence numbers and acknowledgment codes.
